wir haben leider traurige Nachrichten zu verkünden. Nach vier unbeschreiblich intensiven Monaten, in denen wir uns die Köpfe zerbrochen und jede erdenkliche Alternative für unsere mögliche Zukunft untersucht haben, steht fest: Abload, und damit auch alle hochgeladenen Bilder und Verlinkungen, werden zum Ablauf des 30.06.2024 offline gehen. Es tut uns in der Seele weh, aber wir sind uns sicher, dass es keinen anderen gangbaren Weg gibt. Bitte seht uns nach, dass wir uns mit den Überlegungen und Berechnungen so lange Zeit gelassen haben und uns seit unseren letzten Blog-Einträgen zu diesem Thema nicht mit sinnvollen Updates melden konnten. Wir wollten und mussten sichergehen, nichts zu übersehen und die richtige Entscheidung zu treffen.
Wer sich für die Hintergründe interessiert, findet diese im gleich folgenden Text. Allen, die nur diese ersten Absätze lesen, möchten wir schonmal sagen: Vielen Dank, dass ihr Teil dieses tollen solidarischen Projekts wart, das stolze 17 (fast 18) Jahre lang jedermann ermöglicht hat, kostenlos seine Bilder im Internet zu zeigen. Ganz besonders danken wir allen Nutzern, die Abload mit ihren freiwilligen Beiträgen unterstützt haben oder dies bis heute tun. Ihr seid wirklich Helden. Die Spenden der vergangenen Wochen haben wir unter anderem genutzt, um euch eine Möglichkeit zu schaffen, bei Bedarf eure hochgeladenen Bilder herunterzuladen. Weitere Informationen dazu findet ihr nach einem Login im Menüpunkt “Bilder sichern”.
Wir wären euch (sehr) dankbar, wenn ihr eure Unterstützung noch nicht einstellt, da uns diese Funktion und die Arbeiten der letzten Monate unglaublich hohe Kosten verursacht haben (zusätzlich zu denen, die uns so oder so immer anfallen). Wir werden ohnehin um den 20.06.24 herum das letzte Mal Lastschriften einziehen - auch ohne, dass ihr sie aktiv kündigt. Falls jemand trotzdem schon vorher seine Lastschrift-Spenden beenden möchte, bitten wir um einen kurzen Hinweis über unser Kontaktformular (statt die Lastschriften über die Bank zu widerrufen, weil uns das hohe Gebühren verursacht). Wer uns nochmal mit einer zusätzlichen Spende Danke sagen will für die vielen Jahre oder die Download-Funktion, kann dies noch per PayPal oder Überweisung tun. Abschließend möchten wir euch noch darum bitten, bei Bedarf in den nächsten Wochen unser Blog im Auge zu behalten. Falls wir irgendwelche wichtigen Informationen für euch haben, werden wir sie dort veröffentlichen. Schaut bitte insbesondere auch in diesen Eintrag, falls ihr in den kommenden Wochen über technische Fehler oder Probleme stolpert – denn dort veröffentlichen wir alles, was uns bereits bekannt ist und nicht mehr gemeldet werden muss. Hintergründe
Für die Abschaltung des Dienstes gibt es im Wesentlichen drei Gründe. Vom ersten Grund lest ihr schon seit zwölf Jahren in unserem Blog: Während die Betriebskosten immer höher geworden sind, sind die Einnahmen stetig gesunken: Nutzerfreundliche Werbeanzeigen machen sich schon ewig nicht mehr bezahlt; und auch die Spenderzahlen sind seit langer Zeit rückläufig, weil immer mehr Menschen zum Beispiel auf persönliche Clouds zurückgreifen. Der zweite Grund ist, dass unsere Verpflichtungen immer umfassender geworden sind – vor allem durch immer neue gesetzliche Anforderungen. Mittlerweile sind wir diesbezüglich an einem Punkt angekommen, an dem es für ein vergleichsweise winziges Projekt wie unseres definitiv zu viel würde, wenn wir nicht die Reißleine zögen. Schon allein die Kosten für anwaltliche Beratungen in diesem Zusammenhang, die immer komplexer und umfangreicher werden, machen uns einen Strich durch die Rechnung. Der dritte Grund hängt mit den ersten beiden zusammen, steht aber auch für sich alleine: Wir waren immer ein kleines, quasi ehrenamtlich arbeitendes Team – und unser aller private Lebenssituation hat sich (insbesondere in den letzten Jahren) stark verändert. Die “guten alten Schüler- und Studentenzeiten", in denen Abload damals online ging und seine Blütezeit hatte, sind lange vorbei. Mittlerweile haben wir natürlich ganz andere Aufgaben – und diese lassen künftig einfach nicht mehr genug Kapazitäten für den Weiterbetrieb dieses Projekts.
Einige Nutzer haben uns gefragt, warum wir den Dienst nicht “einfach” kostenpflichtig machen, um ihn zu retten. Die kurze Antwort ist, dass das die Herausforderungen der zunehmenden Verpflichtungen und unserer persönlichen Situation leider nicht lösen würde – zumal wir nach den vielen Untersuchungen der letzten Wochen auch nicht davon ausgehen, dass überhaupt ein ausreichend großes Interesse an einer Bezahlversion bestünde. Auch hat man uns gefragt, warum wir Abload nicht in fremde Hände geben. Das liegt vor allem daran, dass wir nicht wollen, dass jemand anderes den Dienst in einer Weise weiterführt, die nicht mit der rein nutzerorientierten Philosophie von Abload vereinbar wäre, die wir immer gelebt haben. Egal, wie man sich bei einer Abgabe auf dem Papier einigen würde: Am Ende hätte jemand anderes die Kontrolle; auch über eure Bilder und Verlinkungen. Und da erscheint uns das Risiko einer falschen Entwicklung einfach zu groß. Deswegen haben wir uns für “ein Ende mit Würde” entschieden – und kündigen dieses hiermit frühzeitig an, damit sich jeder darauf einstellen kann. Uns ist klar, dass das nur ein Trostpflaster ist. Wir wissen, wie sehr man sich an Dienste wie Abload gewöhnt. Man darf aber auch nie vergessen, dass wir immer ein kostenloses Angebot waren, das eine Handvoll Menschen in ihrer Freizeit betrieben haben. Wir hätten im Prinzip wirklich gerne weitergemacht, aber die Zeiten haben sich einfach stark geändert. Wir hoffen, dass ihr uns an dieser Stelle genauso euer Vertrauen schenkt, wie ihr es in den letzten knapp 18 Jahren konntet – und dass wir und Abload euch in positiver Erinnerung bleiben.

Eine mögliche Alternative zum Hochladen und Verlinken von Bildern könnte Directupload sein. Der Betreiber ist in den vergangenen Monaten auf uns zugekommen und hat gefragt, ob es nicht ein Gewinn für uns alle wäre, wenn wir auf seinen Dienst aufmerksam machen würden. Wir haben das besprochen und uns darauf verständigt, dass er eine Werbe-Anzeige bei uns bucht. Der Text stammt vom Betreiber und enthält einige Angaben zum Dienst sowie einen Verweis auf eine Seite mit weiteren Informationen:
Die Werbe-Anzeige ist eine einfache Grafik und liegt auf den Servern von Abload. Folglich ist sie nicht Bestandteil des “Cookie-Banners” und wird jedem Besucher angezeigt.

We regret to inform you of some sad news. After four indescribably intense months during which we racked our brains and explored every conceivable alternative for our possible future, the decision has been made: Abload, along with all uploaded images and links, will go offline at the end of June 30, 2024. It pains us deeply, but we are certain that there is no other viable option. Please understand why we took so long with our considerations and calculations and why we have not been able to provide meaningful updates since our last blog entries on this matter. We wanted and needed to ensure that nothing was overlooked and that we were making the right decision.
For those interested in the background, you'll find it in the text that follows. To all those reading just these first few paragraphs, we would like to say: Thanks that you have been part of this wonderful solidarity project, which for 17 (nearly 18) years has enabled everyone to share their images on the internet for free. A special thanks to all users who have supported Abload with their voluntary contributions or continue to do so to this day. You are truly heroes. The donations from the past weeks have been used, among other things, to provide you with the option to download your uploaded images if needed. More information on this can be found after logging in under the menu item “Bilder sichern”.
We would be (very) grateful if you do not yet discontinue your support, as this feature and the work over the past few months have incurred incredibly high costs for us (in addition to those that we always incur). We will be making the final direct debit withdrawals around June 20, 2024 either way, without requiring an active cancellation from you. However, if anyone wishes to cancel their direct debit donations already before this, we kindly ask you to send us a brief note via our contact form (instead of revoking the direct debits through the bank, as this would incur high fees for us). Background
There are essentially three reasons for the shutdown of the service. The first reason has been discussed on our blog for twelve years: While operating costs have continually increased, revenues have steadily declined: User-friendly advertisements have long since stopped paying off; and the number of donors has been decreasing for a long time as well, as more and more people opt for personal clouds, for example. The second reason is that our obligations have become increasingly comprehensive, especially due to continually new legal requirements. We have reached a point here where it would definitively become too much for a comparatively tiny project like ours if we did not pull the plug. Just the costs of legal consultations in this regard, which are becoming ever more complex and extensive, are proving to be prohibitive already. The third reason is related to the first two but also stands on its own: We have always been a small team, working almost on a voluntary basis, and our private life situations have changed significantly (especially in recent years). The "good old school and university days," when Abload went online and had its heyday, are long gone. By now, we naturally have completely different tasks – and these simply do not leave enough capacity for the continued operation of this project.
Some users have asked us why we don't simply make the service paid to save it. The short answer is that doing so would not address the challenges of increasing obligations and our personal situations, especially since, after many reviews in the past weeks, we do not believe there would be sufficient interest in a paid version. Also, we have been asked why we do not hand Abload over to someone else. This is mainly because we do not want someone else to continue the service in a way that would not be compatible with Abload's user-oriented philosophy, which we have always lived by. No matter how one might agree on paper in the event of a handover, someone else would have control; including over your images and links. And to us, the risk of a wrong development seems simply too great. Therefore, we have opted for "an end with dignity" – and hereby announce it well in advance, so everyone can prepare. We understand that this is only a small consolation. We know how accustomed one can become to services like Abload. But one should never forget that we have always been a free offer, run by a handful of people in their spare time. We really would have liked to continue, but times have simply changed a lot. We hope that you place your trust in us at this point, just as you have been able to over the past nearly 18 years – and that we and Abload remain in your positive memory.

A possible alternative for uploading and linking images might be Directupload. The operator approached us in recent months and asked if it would be a win for everyone if we could make users aware of their service. After discussion, we agreed that they would book an advertisement on our platform. The text comes from the operator and contains some details about the service as well as a reference to a page with more information:
The advertisement is a simple graphic and is hosted on Abload's servers. Consequently, it is not part of the 'cookie banner' and is displayed to every visitor.
